During the recording process for the fifth album the group loses their manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to a different producer. Lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band released Mindfields and begin an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a brief hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and releases their first live album entitled Absolutely Live in 1993.
